Text Box: New Martinsville School
K-5 Library / Media Center

The New Martinsville School Library / Media Center is a 15,000 volume media center serving approximately 700 students in Grades K-5. The Media Center is fully automated, featuring an on-line public access catalog (OPAC) to locate library materials, multi-media encyclopedias, and Internet access.

Students in
K-5 visit the media center weekly with their classes, but are encouraged to use the media center at open library times as well. While there, students will be learning research skills, using those skills to look up information, taking Accelerated Reader tests and reading.

WV Children’s Choice Book Award Program

Students at NMS will be taking part in the WV Children’s Choice Book Award Program again this year. Students in grades 3-6 throughout WV will be reading from a selected list of books all this school year, and in the spring will vote for their favorite to help select the 2010 WV Book Award winner. Last year’s winning book was Maybelle in the Soup, by Katie Speck.  Second place was Henry’s Freedom Box, by Ellen Levine, and third place was Rufus the Scrub Does Not Wear a Tutu, by Jamie McEwan.

Students will be receiving a list of the book nominees in the Media Center and the public library also offers the nominated books.

Book Fair Information

Our school book fair offers a wide variety of reading material for every age. It is held annually in the K-1 Multi-purpose room. Proceeds from the Book Fair benefit both school libraries. This year’s fair will be held during the month of April.
